Philanthropy U
This week I was inspired by a NYT article, “Online University Helps Philanthropic Groups and Their Leaders,” about Philanthropy University. As described in the article, Philanthropy U was founded by Amr Al-Dabbagh, a Saudi businessman and philanthropist. Through his family’s Foundation, he worked with Berkeley’s Haas School of Business to create “massive open online courses,” also known as MOOCs, on how to be a better philanthropist and leader of a nonprofit group. Professors include Paul Brest (total genius) professor emeritus at Stanford Law and former president of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Jessica Jackley a co-founder of Kiva. Each course is broken into short segments of about 11 minutes that stretch over 7 weeks. People who complete all 7 courses receive a certificate in social sector leadership from the Haas School. I’m excited about the possibilities because I am convinced MOOCs, like Philanthropy U and Coursera, will completely transform and democratize education, and in doing so, change the world. So stop binge watching shows on Netflix and instead make yourself smarter by signing up for a free online course today.

It is really well, inspirational and impressive. I am currently searching for a new job, keen to find one that aligns with my passions as I am, like most of your readers I would think, someone who gives all of myself to my work. I noticed a few weeks ago you mentioned you don’t usually list development jobs – I was wondering why? I was most recently a director of development and events for a not-for-profit in nyc and am thinking about staying in the development field and would of course love to have potential jobs that you find listed here…okay, thank you, apologies for the letter like reply – very appreciative,

Emily, thanks so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it and I am delighted to know that you like my blog. In regards to your question, I have concerns about development positions and I am planning to write and article titled, “The Death of the Development Director.” There is a reason why there are always so many development openings and why institutions have such a difficult time filling those jobs. I think organizations needs to rethink how they approach fundraising. In my opinion, everyone in a nonprofit should have a percentage of their job dedicated to fundraising. Even if that percent is tiny, everyone needs to understand their role in supporting and growing the organization. It needs to be a mindset that permeates the entire institution and not a responsibility that is spearheaded by the development director in isolation. So that’s a quick preview…more to come. Thank you for that – you know – I agree with a lot of what you are saying and have said similar points myself. I have seen clashes of so many ED/DD relationships over the years. The two roles over lap so much; and often it is true that the development work is everyones. But hopefully the role of continuing to rethink and inspire and remind others within an organization how to infuse fundraising and relationship building into all an institutions roles and consciousness could still exist as a actual job. This part is so much of the development work I love: building the relationships internally and externally and helping others see and highlight and communicate them, and connecting people with institutions (and individuals within the institution).
I look forward to reading you forth coming article and hope if there are some fantastic development jobs that secretly come your way you might consider sharing them (at least with me!) again, with appreciation, Emily
