CSR VS NONPROFIT
How easy is it to move between corporate social responsibility and the nonprofit sector? Not easy. Do companies value nonprofit experience when hiring CSR positions? Not really. Doesn’t being an ED of a nonprofit make you a better grantmaker? Yes, but I know because I am in both fields. I get questions all the time about CSR and nonprofits. My advice, think about what you really want to do. If you want a job in CSR or corporate philanthropy get an MBA or JD. If you want to run a nonprofit get an MPP, MPA, MBA or JD (or any other graduate degree). You can jump tracks, but not easily and it’s easier to go from CSR to nonprofits, than it is to go from nonprofits to CSR.
